题目：Through the Looking-Glass of Retranslations: On a Wide Spectrum of Hypotheses, and on Thresholds of Interpretations
主讲人：Guillermo Sanz Gallego
Guillermo Sanz Gallego is a professor of Translation Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he teaches Translation Studies and research methodology, and literary translation, among others. He is a member of the CLIC research group (VUB), and of the International James Joyce Foundation. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on Joyce’s studies, and on the translation and retranslation of literature and historic texts. He coordinates the James Joyce in Translation Centre.
The study aims at providing an overview of current research conducted on the field of retranslations. I will start my presentation by discussing the different definitions of the concept, and the relevance of retranslations within the discipline of Translation Studies. I will also focus on the different reasons that motivate publishing houses to retranslate a literary text. I will also discuss the most influential and controversial theory within this field of study, i.e., the ‘Retranslation Hypothesis’ (Berman 1990; Bensimon 1990; Chesterman 2000). Finally, we will explore the most innovating methodologies and hypotheses that have been applied to research on the topic in the past few years, such as the analysis of retranslations based on process-oriented approaches.
